Raiding and You

This is basically a guide of tips and things that need to be remembered while raiding. Raiding has responsibilities and can seem like a job at times. Just remember, raiding is for fun, but it takes a lot of teamwork.

I.) BE ON TIME. DON”T LEAVE EARLY.
We raid from 8pm-12. If you are going to participate in our raids, be available during those times. Don’t come late and don’t leave early. We realize there are emergencies or special circumstances. Let an officer know, but realize that you may lose your spot for that raid.

Remember to accept or decline the raid invites in the calendar. We use this calendar in order to plan raids and if you don’t accept or decline, we can’t plan for you and you may not end up with a spot for that raid.

If you have agreed to attend a raid or even a pick up group, be on time. Our definition of “ON TIME” is to be there a few minutes before invites start. Remember, that you are not the only person who is spending their time to raid. There are other people depending on you to be there. It’s a waste of other’s people real life time when they are forced to wait on you; it is especially frustrating when it is because of a frivolous reason.

On the other hand, this is a game, and people understand that real life obligations take precedence, so if there is a special reason you can’t be there, let an officer know or post on the forums prior to the raid and make arrangements.

If you do accept and don’t show without notifying an officer or posting on the forums, you will be docked ep points because you stood us up. If it is an emergency and you don’t have time to let someone know, be prepared to apologize to everyone that was affected by your not being there.

Opposite of being on time is leaving early. If you need to leave early, let an officer know at the start of a raid. If there is an emergency, attempt to let the raid leader know what is going on and that you need to leave. If it is such an emergency that you have to log off immediately, be prepared to explain when you log in next.

Also, excessive AFKs are not acceptable. It is understood that we are all human beings and have biological needs, but remember, there are other people sitting around waiting on you. If you have to go afk, tell your raid leader. If you even think that you are going to have to divide your attention between raiding and something going on irl, deal with real life and you can raid another time.

II.) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU WILL NEED.
Bring anything you will need. This includes food, water, shards, arrows/bullets, candles, trinkets, reagents, potions, pet food, extra gear, resist gear, etc. Do not depend on other people to have these things for you. As for water, what if there isn’t a mage for some reason? Yes, you can make shards during the raid, but what if we need someone summoned prior to be able to make shards? Bring your own supplies.

Also, repair your gear before going. Don’t show up to a raid with your gear almost gone. You can’t always repair in instances and you will just hold up everyone else while you repair and run back. Not to mention, it irritates people. Take a moment to repair before going. If you are on time, it shouldn’t make you late.

III.) BE COOL.
One thing you need to understand before raiding is that people get frustrated. It is difficult for raid leaders to be in control of 10 -25 people, come up with and explain tactics, deal with loot, and do their own raid responsibilities like DPS or tanking and still do any other things raid leaders do. So, if you get yelled at, try to take it in stride and correct whatever you did. Remember, that the raid leader is juggling a lot of stuff and most likely didn’t mean to take your head off with a sharp tongue. So, stay cool and focus at the task at hand.

On the other side, if you are a raid leader or just another raider, don’t flip out at people. We are all there for fun, and we are human beings. If someone makes a mistake, it is understandable to get frustrated with them, but in most cases, it was just a mistake and completely unintended. Yes, there are people out there who are messing around and may cause things to happen either on accident or on purpose and that is when it is time to take action. If someone is consistently making mistakes or causing problems, then there is a problem and appropriate action will be taken.

Also, remember, that there are times when we will need to rotate people in and out of the raid. While we would love to never have to do rotations, the reality is that we may have to rotate people in and out at times for various reasons including fight strategies and performance issues. Don’t get bent out of shape. It isn’t a personal issue.

IV.) BE PATIENT
There will be short times of inactivity between pulls to discuss strategies or summon someone new in or whatnot. I know it is boring if you are just waiting around, but something is going on. Just be patient! We all want to get going asap.

V.) LISTEN TO THE RAID LEADER & PAY ATTENTION TO RAID CHANNEL.
You will be given instructions on how something is to be done. Listen to what the raid leader says. Don’t do you what you think is the best thing to do unless it agrees with what the raid leader has laid out. In most cases, that person is leading the raid because they have spent time working out strategies and planning for the raid. If you have an idea or wish to contribute speak up when it is appropriate. It is not appropriate to start contributing in the middle of a boss fight or when there are 5 adds. Wait until a more appropriate time. If the raid leader doesn’t use your strategy, don’t get upset or angry. It isn’t that you weren’t heard or that you aren’t respected, it is just that we are going to try it a different way.

Also, on this note, don’t use raid channel for frivolous reasons. If you have something to contribute or need to answer a question that is what the raid channel is for. If you want to joke around or just chat, use guild chat or make your own channel that others can join. Keep the raid channel clear for raid-related stuff and don’t spam out guild chat.

Remember that as a raider, ventrilo is an important tool. As such, there is a degree of etiquette which much be observed. Stop chatter when we are at a boss fight. If you have this uncontrollable need to talk to someone, use whispers. In fact, it is best to not talk about anything at all other than responding to your directions. Also, if you hear one person told to be quiet, that probably means no one (including you) should be talking.

VI.) DO YOUR JOB.
You are there to contribute something specific to the raid. This is class dependent and all raid leaders have different things they want you to do. Listen, and do it. If you are asked to do something beyond your abilities, let them know; they may not realize that something with your class has changed. Just do your job.

If you have a question about your job, ask the raid leader or another person who is attending and is the same class as you. It is better to ask and be sure than to just jump into something where you don’t what you re doing. No one will think less of you.

VII.) AGGRO MANAGEMENT
Aggro management is a HUGE part of your job. If you are a damage dealer, it is EXTREMELY important that you do not pull aggro during fights. Although you make think you are super great because you were the top damage dealer, it does not necessarily make you a great player. In fact, if you pull aggro, it makes you like someone who can’t play their class. Also, if you are dead, you aren’t doing your job. A dead warlock, mage, warrior, or hunter or whoever can’t deal damage if they are dead.

When you pull aggro from the main tank, you have done a huge amount of damage, not to the mob, but to the raid as a whole. The main tank is there to handle the beating the mob will be dishing out to him. The main tank is taking all the damage that other people are NOT EQUIPPED OR DESIGNED to handle. Every time someone pulls aggro off the main tank, that main tank has to regain aggro. It is like starting over from the beginning of the fight. Wait for the main tank to get sufficient aggro before you attack, usually a count of 5. And remember, don’t pull aggro.

Also, the healers are focused on the main tank or other specific members of the raid, and their attention should be there and not on someone else. If a healer is distracted because they need to heal you because you pulled aggro, and the main tank dies, and the mob is lose and kills everyone, that is your fault. You just wiped a raid that many people had set real life aside to attend. Don’t pull aggro off the main tank.

VIII.) LOOT.
If you are participating in a raid, there is going to be a loot system. Follow the system. We use EPGP and you can get more information about that system in the EPGP section. Understand that by joining and attending the raid, you have agreed to this system. If something happens during the raid and you have a problem with it, use tells or whispers to discuss it with your raid leader. Flipping out in all caps on the raid channel will not achieve your aims. It will, however, make you look like a jerk.

Different guilds and groups have different loot systems. Be aware of what the system is for that raid before you go. This way, you can decide if it is right for you or not. By asking ahead of time, you can avoid a horrible misunderstanding.

Don’t loot mobs until the end of the fight and everyone is rezzed. Too often, we have had someone die and then someone else loots before the dead person is rezzed and they aren’t on the loot table. Wait until the fight is over and everyone is rezzed.

We are all part of a team and by meeting our own responsibilities, we help the raid to advance, and therefore, helping ourselves to advance.
